Who do you think was the greatest hockey team ever?

I have two choices, either the ‘55-’60 Canadiens or the ‘84-’88 Oilers. Both teams had many of Hall of Famers and won numerous Stanley Cups with the Canadiens winning 5 in row to close out the decade of the 1950s and the Oilers winning 4 in 5 seasons. My pick is the late ’50s Canadiens…they had the best goalie in the league in Jacques Plante, the best defensemen in the league in Doug Harvey, the best center in Jean Believue, and at that time the greatest goal scorer in league history with Maurice Richard.

My pick would go to the 1987-88 Edmonton Oilers. Here’s the only reason you need to know why: 16 wins and ONLY 2 losses in the playoffs. Now I know a lot of you will say the 1976-77 Canadiens or some other teams with better regular season records were better, but please its not how you start but HOW YOU FINISH that really matters. So many teams like 67 Hawks, 71 Bruins, 86 Oilers failed after having wonderful regular seasons. The 88 Oilers’ 16-2 record is the best since 1980, and I don’t think any team can beat that record. The Ducks went 16-5 last year, hardly a match for my Oilers. If you’re thinking the Canadiens 12-1 record in 76 was impressive, their decisiveness wasn’t. The Oilers didn’t simply beat opponents, they outright massacred them. In the 88 playoffs, the Oilers beat the Jets in 5, Flames in 4, Wings in 5, Bruins in 4. In the finals, they beat the Bruins 2-1, 4-2, 6-3 in the first 3 games, see a trend here? Getting better every game, the mark of THE greatest team.

Tough call. I would venture to guess that the Soviet teams of the 60s-70s were most dominant. Until the rest of the world figured out how to play them, they were far more sophisticated and talented than the world.

The 1987 Canada Cup team in my mind was the best hockey team ever. Gretzky and Lemieux on the same team (and same line) how can you go wrong?

I can’t agree with you more. The Habs of the late 50’s were the best dynasty of ALL time.

The Pocket Rocket, Boom-Boom, Le Gros Bill, The Rocket, Jake the Snake…..some of the best hockey nicknames as well.

early 70’s soviet Olympic Teams were pretty good, but the 1980 USA gold team is still my fav. i like underdogs.

some people may not wanna hear it but the 1964-1980 Soviet team was probably the best. You can’t really put any year on them, they were always dominant. Starting in 1964 they didnt lose until the 1980 US team knocked them off. They had the best chemistry of any team; 16 years of the same linemates will do that for you. They played good hockey, fast hockey, and most importantly, physical hockey. they get my vote.

The mighty ducks from the movie.
Flying V and the triple deek c’mon!

    But Seriously,

The Big bad Bruins of the 70’s. If they couldn’t out skate you they would out muscle you. You do not see the later anymore!

My choice would be a coin flipping tie between the two teams in the Summit Series. The Canadian team was without a number of players that had moved to the WHA making the two teams virtually equal.

Undecided! But I think it’s best to find out where most of the players come from first! I like a team that has hockey player’s from there own state playing for them! But I like to see where we don’t have any players out of North America!

Gretzky, Fuhr, Coffey, Kurri, Anderson, Lowe, Messier, Tikkanen.

In their prime, the Oilers were better than anyone, and I don’t even like ‘em.

I’d go with the ‘55-’60 Habs. Five consecutive championships is something no other professional sports team has ever done…..including the Patriots…or the ‘72 Dolphins.

I don’t remember the exact year, but one year in the mid 70s Montreal finished with 132 points. They only lost 8 games all season.

    01-02 Detroit Red Wings.

They had sure Hall of Famers such as Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Larionov, Hull, Hasek, and Fedorov and won the presidents trophy and had a 16-7 record in the playoffs including finishing off Carolina in the Cup finals in 5 games. Sorry 80’s Oilers fans
