This is a quick review. Check out a good communication class or text for more details.
    1. Be a good listener. The parent and child have a lot of useful information to share. The child’s interests and talents may be key to helping the child learn or behave. If something is going on in the child’s life, like a divorce, death, changing houses etc. these events can effect the child at day care.
    2. Never give advice unless the person has asked you what you think or for suggestions. even then, think before speaking, you cannot take your words back.
    3. Always be kind, but truthful ( sometimes that is difficult to do.)
    4. In general, keep it simple and to the point.
    5. Take your sentence structure and vocabulary down another notch when speaking to young children. They also often do not understand sarcasm, irony, and innuendos. You may think you are being funny, the kids make take you literally!
    6. Consider the cultural , economic, language differences of your students and families.
Of course each of the above could be developed into a paragraph or more, using your own examples and observations.
